DEAR FUTURE IMMIGRANTS: PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT BEFORE MOVING TO AUSTRALIA!
DEAR FUTURE IMMIGRANTS: PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT BEFORE MOVING TO AUSTRALIA!

As anti-immigration sentiment grows and One Nation's popularity rises, perhaps we can do both immigrants and immigration sceptics a favour.
Instead of advertising Australia with beautiful beaches, great lifestyle, high salaries and the Opera House, let's give prospective migrants the other brochure.

WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA!
Along with your Australian Permanent Residence Visa, you will also inherit:

  • $1 trillion in Australian Government gross debt.
  • An economy that depends on population growth for growth's sake, while the GDP per capita declines, making you poorer.
  • High taxes. Become successful enough, and the government will take 30 to 50%.
  • A national minimum wage of $37/hour for casual staff, including super. So if you are accustomed to domestic help, congratulations - you are now the cleaner, gardener and handyman.
  • An economy and household wealth system deeply attached to property. We buy houses from each other for increasingly extraordinary amounts and call ourselves wealthier - unfortunately or fortunately for some, the property values are in decline.
  • 3 million Age Pension recipients by 2030, with an ageing population requiring more healthcare, aged care and taxpayers.
  • An international education industry worth tens of billions of dollars, but if post-study migration opportunities disappear, who will spend $200K on a degree in this AI age where knowledge is available for free?
  • An export economy heavily dependent on commodities such as iron ore and coal, with China remaining our biggest trading partner, which is looking for cheaper alternatives in Africa.
  • Complete dependence on imported manufactured goods. If US-China tensions ever seriously disrupt Asian supply chains, what will we wear, use or drive?
  • And finally...
Racism is getting normalised!!

Perhaps prospective migrants really should think twice.
Don't spend your family's life savings chasing Australian PR. If you can build a successful, meaningful life in your own country, perhaps stay and help make your country prosperous.

But here's the great Australian irony:
We want fewer immigrants...
while needing doctors, nurses, engineers, construction workers, aged-care workers, entrepreneurs, taxpayers and younger workers to support an ageing population.

So maybe immigrants aren't the real problem.
And maybe One Nation voters aren't the problem either.

Perhaps both groups should stop blaming each other and start asking harder questions about productivity, housing, taxation, infrastructure, manufacturing, education and Australia's long-term economic strategy.

Because whether your family arrived 200 years ago or 2 years ago, once you call Australia home, you have a stake in making it work.
The question isn't simply how many people Australia should accept.
It's:
What kind of Australia are we building for the people who are already here?
