The Program
The Professional Year is a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) gazetted, structured professional development program combining formal learning and workplace experience. A Professional Year will:
Familiarise participants with the norms and values in the Australian workplaces as well as the Australian employment market and workplace culture Example: Write resumes and interview skills.
Teach participants how to communicate effectively and professionally in the Australian workplace with colleagues, managers and clients
Include an internship (work experience) to educate participants about all aspects of work practices in an Australian company.
Completion of a recognised Professional Year will provide the participant 10 bonus points under the General Skilled Migration points test.

As per the announcement made by the professional accounting
associations (CPA, ICAA and NIA) on 1st of July 2010, graduates
from Australian accounting degrees can use Skilled Migration
Internship Program (SMIPA) as an alternative pathway to
achieving full skills assessment, avoiding the need for
IELTS 7.0 in all bands.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this program, you must have:
Graduated from a related higher education program within Australia completed over a minimum of 18 months duration
Applied for, hold, a subclass 485 Temporary Resident Visa for Skilled Migration
Achieved a minimum of IELTS 6.0 in all bands
An acknowledgement letter of Skills Assessment from one of the relevant professional bodies (ACS, CPA, ICAA, NIA, Engineers Australia)
