The Program

The Professional Year is a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) gazetted, structured professional development program combining formal learning and workplace experience. A Professional Year will:

• Familiarise participants with the norms and values in the Australian workplaces as well as the Australian employment market and workplace culture Example: Write resumes and interview skills
• Teach participants how to communicate effectively and professionally in the Australian workplace with colleagues, managers and clients
• Include an internship (work experience) to educate participants about all aspects of work practices in an Australian company.

Completion of a recognised Professional Year will provide the participant 5 bonus points under the General Skilled Migration points test.

The program is available in Accounting, Computer Science (ICT) and Engineering profession:

• The Australian Computer Society Professional Year for ICT graduates
• Skilled Migration Internship Program for Accountants (SMIPA)
• Professional Year in Engineering Program

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this program, you must have:

• Graduated from a related higher education program within Australia completed over a minimum of 18 months duration
• Applied for, hold, a subclass 485 Temporary Resident Visa for Skilled Migration
• Achieved a minimum of IELTS 6.0 in all bands
• An acknowledgement letter of Skills Assessment from one of the relevant professional bodies (ACS, CPA, ICAA, NIA, Engineers Australia)
